CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Advertisements that promise the latest and greatest products for burning fat and dropping weight fast are everywhere. But, can you really drop 10, 20, or 30 pounds quickly and keep it off? The answer is "yes" if you have the right game plan and these top 10 tips.

It took Erin Singraber several months to lose more than 40 pounds, but now she is looking fit and feeling healthy.

Singraber turned to Jason Hays at Lifetime Fitness in Burr Ridge, whose clients have shed up to100 pounds.

"It's exciting to go shopping now and to try on new clothes and to see how everything is huge on you," Singraber says. "I put the time and the effort into it and I am very happy with my results."

The hottest fat fighting trends for 2013 don't include fad diets or awkward equipment. Instead, it's all about healthy eating and good old-fashioned exercise using your own body in fun and creative ways.

"If the person stays very motivated, disciplined and committed to their goals they could see anywhere from a 20 to 30 pound drop," Lifetime Fitness' Certified Fitness Professional Jason Hays explains.

The top way to fight fat is to start by getting back to the basics with body weight training. There's no need for equipment because your body does all the work with push-ups, pull ups and resistance.

There is also TRX suspension training, which combines controlled moves while hanging from straps, and core training with exercise balls to get a super six pack.

Zone training keeps you working out at the best heart rate to burn fat and Alpha Crossfit burns fat while strengthening with modified Olympic-style weight lifting.

The next five tips revolve around diet. A word that weight loss coach Sarah Schuster prefers not to use.

"We associate diet with restriction," Schuster says. "We associate diet with negative impacts on food."

Tip number six proves mom was right after all. Studies show more people are now choosing to eat more balanced meals as part of a weight loss plan.

"Whole, clean, fresh and natural--that is how we need to eat," Schuster says.

Balanced eating doesn't mean bland taste.

"A chicken breast topped with a caprese salad...fresh mozzarella, tomato basil, slightly melted drizzled with balsamic and a side of roasted mixed vegetables," is just one meal Schuster recommends.

At number seven, include protein with every meal to promote weight loss. Number eight: drink half your body weight in ounces of water a day to flush toxins and keep up energy.

Number nine is to set realistic personal goals.

"If you're not setting goals you can't achieve anything," Hays insists. "You have to have structure."

Finally, at number ten: individual metabolic tests are becoming popular. They measure your body while running and then measure again when resting. The scientific results determine a target heart rate and optimal calories for maximum weight loss.

Experts say avoid fad weight loss diets like juicing, HCG, grapefruit, cabbage and the popular Hollywood Diet. You'll drop weight fast, but it comes right back. When choosing a diet plan, ask yourself if it's realistic and something you can sustain.

And, nothing feels better than getting fit and winning that fight with fat. Just ask Erin.

"It's a good, good feeling," Erin says.

Remember to check with your doctor before starting any weight loss program.
