2 reasons to go “Mediterranean” with Type 2 Diabetes

Posted: Updated:

British researchers found the Mediterranean diet is the number one choice for people with diabetes that want to lose weight, and lower blood sugar levels.

Researchers reviewed the results of about twenty studies, comparing the effects of seven popular diets among adults with Type 2 Diabetes.

The diets were Mediterranean, high protein, low-carb, low glycemic index, Vegetarian, Vegan, and high-fiber. Patients followed one of those diets for at least six months.

Results found only those on the Mediterranean diet lowered their blood sugar and lost weight. The average weight lost was four pounds.

A Mediterranean diet emphasizes fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, fish, and uses olive oil and herbs in place of butter and salt. Saturated fats from red meat and dairy products make up less than 8% of calories consumed.

Some experts think Mediterranean diets may be more successful because they're easier to maintain than restrictive low-carb or high protein diets.
