Some people do it as a diet. Others use it as a cleanse. But it seems like everyone is juicing. In fact, the Wall Street Journal reports that juicer sales increased by 71 percent last year.
But is this just a fad or is a healthy way of life?
We talked to a man who completely changed his life with juicing. He's lost about 85 pounds and counting. All he has is juice and water for 60 days at a time and get this -- he's surrounded by tempting foods all day long.
Sizzling roast beef, sandwiches, French fries and cake surround Johnny Arenas all day long while he cooks at Majerle's Sports Grill in Goodyear.
"Everything is out, it's just juice and water," he says.
When the cravings kick in, he heads to the fridge.
"This is my green machine recipe."
Every day he turns down fatty foods for 96 ounces of fruit and vegetable juice. In April he started at over 400 pounds. Now he's down to 315.
Arenas was inspired by the documentary Fat, Sick And Nearly Dead.
"Wow that is me. And it made me feel so bad. And before that I had a lot of pains. I hurt, coming to work, it was hard so I was like I don't want to be like that. I'm going to give it a try and I'm going to do it," says Arenas.
So juicing works for Johnny and maybe you've heard of some other people who've had success. But could it work for you?
"Anybody's a good candidate for juicing, just because it does add that nutrient as far as the vegetables, you can eat a variety of vegetables that you wouldn't otherwise get," says nutrition expert Felicia Romero.
Felicia Romero with AZ Pro Physiques says long term meal replacement comes with risks, but recommends a detox.
"If you're going to start in a cleanse or detox, you can juice for 2 or 3 days max and then I would slowly start adding whole food back in while still keeping the juice in," she says.
Arenas will continue his diet in two month intervals until he's down to his high school weight.
"I want to teach my kid martial arts, I want to watch his football game and if I kept going the way I was, I wouldn't have saw that."
Johnny is still trying to lose another 100 pounds. He says if you're interested in juicing, you have be mentally prepared to succeed.
4 to 5 carrots
2 handfuls of baby spinach
2 celery stalks
1 apple (cored and sliced)
A few fresh parsley leaves
A small piece of ginger
Wash all produce and put in juicer
