CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -
That time of year is here! We're launching the St. Baldrick's - FOX 32 schools challenge once again, spearheaded by Good Day Chicago's Patrick Elwood.
Little Jake is fighting acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
Students at McHenry High Schools are being brave and going bald as part of our St. Baldrick's – FOX 32 schools challenge, for Jake and other kids like him, bravely battling youth cancer.
It was last period at McHenry West High School, and to say these students are a spirited bunch would be putting it mildly. FOX 32 was invited to attend a pep rally to rally the troops, but they didn't need much direction!
McHenry Schools have been among the top performers in this campaign to help kids fight cancer for the last five years, thanks to efforts like those of senior Jordan Carr. She has gone bald to raise money and awareness since she was a freshman.
In this fight against pediatric cancer, you just can't help wanting to help others. Even with prom coming up in two months, she's happy to shave her head once again.
"This will be my second year at prom with a bald head," Carr said. "It's nice it's breezy – very low maintenance. It makes my eyes pop, so I look good anyway!"
At the same time across town at McHenry East High, the students there were fired up too. St. Baldrick's resonates in these parts. Some students at East have also been on board since they walked in the door as first years.
Aaron Montain said it's a good look! This will be his fourth year in a row, participating in the challenge.
"I moved in from Seattle, and I heard about this thing – St. Baldrick's," Montain said. "Eever since then, I been doing whatever I can to help kids with cancer."
