More than 2,300 flights canceled at NYC-area airports

Posted: Updated:

More than 2,300 flights have been canceled at New York City's three major airports.

Flight-tracking website FlightAware shows massive cancellations at John. F Kennedy, LaGuardia, and Newark Liberty airports.

FlightAware indicated that most domestic carriers suspended operations by 5 p.m. Friday. Flights will resume sometime Saturday afternoon. International carriers may continue to operate.

Airlines issued so-called "weather waivers," allowing passengers flying in the storm-affected areas to change their flight date without paying a change fee.

Airlines try to get ahead of big storms by canceling flights in advance.
