CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -
A 22-year-old West Town woman and a 21-year-old male companion have been arrested and charged with abuse and neglect of the woman's 8-month-old son and 3-year-old daughter. Police say the boy had suffered broken bones and burns, and both children were suffering from malnourishment.
At a bond hearing Saturday, bail was set at $750,000 each for Priscilla Forys and Julian Hernandez.
About 4 p.m. on Jan. 30, police were made aware of a suspected child abuse case by St. Mary of Nazareth Hospital, when Priscilla Forys brought her 8-month-old son into the hospital with injuries consistent with abuse -- multiple fractures, burns, and malnourishment, police said.
The state Department of Children and Family Services were also contacted, and they worked with Area Central Special Victims Unit detectives in a joint investigation, which police said revealed that Forys, 22, and Julian Hernandez, 21, were responsible for the injuries, as well as severe neglect in the form of malnourishment of Forys' 3-year-old daughter.
Forys and Hernandez, both of the 2300 block of West Grand Avenue, were taken into custody on Wednesday and charged with felony child abuse offenses, police said.
Forys was charged with aggravated battery resulting in great bodily harm, a misdemeanor count of endangering the life/health of a child, and a misdemeanor count of contributing to the neglect of a child. Hernandez was charged with aggravated battery resulting in great bodily harm and a misdemeanor count of endangering the life/health of a child.
Forys and Hernandez were both scheduled to appear in court for a bond hearing on Saturday.
Both are next scheduled to appear in court Feb. 13.
