Skubick: Mark Bernstein has the name and the money to run for Governor

Posted: Updated:

To run for a statewide office there are two necessities: Money and name ID. Mark Bernstein has both. Yeah. That Bernstein. Unless you reside in Ohio, you can't avoid the law firm's name cause it is everywhere from Red Wing hockey to the evening news.

To be sure father Sam may be more famous, but he's not even remotely interested in running for governor. The question is: Is Mark? You could make a strong case beyond the two prerequisites listed above. First the Democratic field is currently devoid of a favorite.

The family certainly has the public service bug. Brother Richard tried to wrestle the party nomination for attorney general but the UAW had other ideas.

Mark Bernstein was just elected to the University of Michigan Board of Regents. Maybe you remember the Bernstein bus that trolled the state looking for votes. The Bernstein camp boasts that Mark got 200,000 more votes for that post than Mr. Snyder got when he ran.

Never mind that the top of the ticket usually determines the winner in these university races as the voters don't know squat about the candidates per se. All of this is adding up to a bid for governor?

Mr. Bernstein wants nothing to do with this story and would not be quoted for any of it, but poking around you can guess at reasons why he will not jump in. He has a young family at home.

He was just elected to that U of M seat and probably wants to prove his worth before stepping onto a larger field. Besides if he ran for governor now, some Republicans would accuse him of telling the voters he wanted the U of M job but was only using it and them as a stepping stone to higher office. The veracity of the charge is irrelevant. There's no rush. He's 41. The TV commercials will continue to give him the name ID he needs and he's not ready to abandon the law firm which will provide the money he needs, should he decide to run down the road. For now the chances of seeing a Bernstein for Governor bumper sticker are very remote. Very.
