LIRR storm recovery update - Fox 2 News Headlines

The Long Island Railroad has announced train service will operate on a nearly-normal weekday schedule on most branches Monday, February 11, with some cancellations planned. 

Ten trains will be canceled in the morning (out of 143 normal AM rush hour trains). Customers can find the list of 10 cancellations by referring to 'Modified Schedule 1,' which can be found at this link on the Long Island Rail Road website.

Customers are urged to allow extra time for travel on Monday because scattered weather related delays are likely as the LIRR continues to recover from the storm. Some of the LIRR's trains, yards, switches and tracks were buried under two feet or more of snow. LIRR employees have worked around the clock to clear the equipment, track and stations. But customers should use caution because some station platforms and walkways remain icy. 

The LIRR will be offering customers near normal weekday train service on nine of its 11 branches, including its City Zone and the Babylon, Port Washington, Port Jefferson, Far Rockaway, Long Beach, Hempstead, West Hempstead and Oyster Bay Branches.  

Monday morning, the LIRR will not run trains east of Speonk on the Montauk or east of Ronkonkoma to Greenport. Roads to Greenport reportedly are currently not passable so busing between Ronkonkoma to Greenport will only occur if roads have been cleared. There will be no busing on the Montauk Branch. 

'Kiss & Ride'

Parking may be an issue at some LIRR stations in Suffolk that have not been plowed although LIRR has brought in extra LIRR forces and private contractors to clear at least some of Ronkonkoma parking areas prior to AM rush. That effort is continuing. Customers are advised to consider getting a lift to their LIRR station in the AM to avoid parking hassles. 

Modified Schedule 1 Cancellations:

Under Modified Schedule 1, the following 10 trains that normally run on weekday mornings will be cancelled. 

Babylon Branch

• The 6:57 AM train from Freeport due NY at 7:40 AM is cancelled. Customers will be accommodated by the 6:32 AM train from Babylon due NY at 7:37 AM with added stops at Freeport, Baldwin, and Rockville Centre.
• The 7:29 AM train from Freeport due NY at 8:13 AM is cancelled. Customers will be accommodated by the 7:11 AM train from Massapequa Park due NY 8:08 AM with added stops at Freeport, Baldwin, and Rockville Centre.
• The 8:10 AM train from Freeport due NY at 8:50 AM is cancelled. Customers will be accommodated by the 7:45 AM train from Babylon due NY 8:56 AM with added stops at Freeport, Baldwin, and Rockville Centre.
• The 8:25 AM train from Freeport due NY at 9:08 AM is cancelled. Customers will be accommodated by the 8:03 AM train from Babylon due NY at 9:11 AM with added stops at Freeport, Baldwin, and Rockville Centre.

Far Rockaway Branch

• The 8:10 AM train from Far Rockaway due NY at 9:05 AM is cancelled. Customers will be accommodated by the 8:21 AM train from Far Rockaway due NY at 9:17 AM with added stops at Rosedale, Laurelton, and Locust Manor.

Hempstead Branch:

• The 7:36 AM train from Hempstead due Atlantic Terminal at 8:28 AM is cancelled. Customers will be accommodated by the 8:03 AM train from Hempstead due NY at 8:51 AM with added stops at Queens Village, Hollis, and Jamaica. Customers for Atlantic Terminal change at Jamaica.

Long Beach Branch:

• The 8:03 AM train from Long Beach due NY at 8:54 AM is cancelled. Customers will be accommodated by the 8:08 AM train from Long Beach due NY at 9:02 AM

Port Jefferson/Huntington Branch:

• The 6:25 AM train from Hicksville due NY at 7:11 AM is cancelled. Customers will accommodated by the 6:15 AM train from Huntington due NY at 7:17 AM with added stops at Carle Place, Merillon Avenue, and New Hyde Park. The 5:44 AM train from Port Jefferson due NY 7:20 AM will add a stop at Hicksville.

Port Washington Branch:

• The 6:17 AM train from Port Washington due NY at 7:03 AM is cancelled. Customers will accommodated by the 6:27 AM train from Port Washington due NY at 7:14 AM.

West Hempstead Branch:

• The 8:54 AM train from West Hempstead due 9:40 AM at Atlantic Terminal is cancelled. Customers will be accommodated by the 10:12 AM from West Hempstead which will terminate at Valley Stream where customers will need to transfer to trains to Atlantic Terminal and NY.

The best way to be prepared for the unexpected is to be informed. The LIRR urges customers to:

• Sign up for free email or text message service updates.
• Visit our website for periodic service updates.
• Listen to the radio and television news: During any storm or emergency, this is the fastest way to find out how train service is affected. We will continuously provide information to the media.
• Call our Travel Information Center by dialing 511 and saying "LIRR". The Travel Information Center will be fully staffed, and there will also be a taped message describing our current service conditions. Please be aware that the volume of calls at the Travel Information Center will dramatically increase during a weather emergency, and you may experience delays getting through.
• Make sure you pick up a current LIRR timetable, as it will provide you with a frame of reference for train departure times at your station if severe weather requires us to run other than our normal schedule.
• At Your Station, listen closely for public address announcements if you are in Penn Station, Atlantic Terminal, or at a station on one of our branches.
• Depending on weather and service conditions, Long Island Rail Road employees will be on hand to answer questions about service and, if necessary, alternative means of travel.
