CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

FOX 32's Darlene Hill has exclusively learned that the two suspects arrested in the shooting death of 15-year-old Hadiya Pendleton are the alleged gunman and driver, and police say the gunman has confessed.

Chicago police zeroed in on the persons of interest thanks to a tip. The two men, believed to be 18 and 20 years old, were pulled over at a light near 67th Street and South Chicago Avenue. They were brought into the police station at 51st and Wentworth just after midnight.

Police sources told FOX 32 exclusively that said a third party identified the alleged driver, the driver in turn gave up the alleged gunman.

That alleged gunman confessed to pulling the trigger, but said he did not intend to shoot or kill Hadiya Pendleton. The alleged gunman told police that he thought he was shooting at rival gang members, thought to be threatening their turf. He said it was all a mistake, according to exclusive information from FOX 32 police sources.

Chicago police also said that the community demonstrated great strength and unity in carrying out the "if you see something, say something" practice.

There is a $40,000 reward for the information leading to Hadiya Pendleton's murderer. Officers received a generous amount of tips and possible leads from residents, leading to these arrests. They have been working around the clock to solve Hadiya's murder, and wanted to thank the community for their assistance.

Chicago police are questioning the two suspects, and expect charges to be filed soon.

Hadiya Pendleton's family is cautiously optimistic but waiting until charges are filed.

"None of us will get our hopes up until as stated, there are charges, that is the only time we will get our hopes up… Per Cleopatra and Anthony, my cousins, the parents of Hadiya Pendleton, they have said that at this point, they have no statement to make, they will definitely make a statement as soon as there have been charges made for any individual that has caused this devastation to our family," said Pendleton's cousin, Shatira Wilks

The development comes less than 24 hours after Pendleton's funeral garnered global attention, with dignitaries and First Lady Michelle Obama in attendance.

FOX 32 News has confirmed Pendleton's mother received a phone call from Mayor Rahm Emanuel Sunday morning to inform the family of the case=breaking developments.

"The mayor has been very comforting to our family and I would not be surprised at anything when it comes to the mayor's level of comfort so him keeping Cleo posted on anything, there could be a lot of certainty to that," Wilks said.

Family spokesperson and cousin Shatira Wilks said there will never be closure.

"There's no closure when you lose a family member, a child, a parent losing a child, they never have closure. She will still cry the same tears that she cried at the funeral, 20 years from now," Wilks said.

Just blocks away from where the 15 year old lost her life, long time Hyde Park residents reacted to the developments in the case.

"When you do something like that, how can you live with yourself, you know what I'm saying and I know whoever they got, they have families too and it's actually hurting everybody, not only the family, the victim, everybody is being hurt by it so you know, crime doesn't pay," Dorothy Coleman said.
