Neighbors: Wilmington Murder Victim Lived in Fear

Posted: Updated:
Newark DE -

"This is just an enormously sad situation," said Bernard August as he guarded the home of his neighbor, Christine Belford in Newark, DE.

She and another woman were shot and killed early Monday morning at the New Castle County Courthouse in Wilmington.  Belford was preparing to attend a child support hearing regarding three kids she has with ex-husband David Matusiewicz.

He served prison time for kidnapping the children and taking them to Mexico.

Belford got the kids back but neighbors say she lived in constant, around-the-clock fear that they could be taken again, or that something worse could happen to them…or her.

"She had something done to the windows so that they were wired and locked and secure because at one point she thought she saw someone looking in," said neighbor Lois Dawson who lives across the street.

"She had cameras (installed) because someone was going through her mailbox," she said.

Neighbors are now coping with the fact that a friend is gone and even more devastating, that three kids are now left without a mother.

"She was a very strong person," August said.
