Big Bear Couple Tied Up by Dorner in Cabin Speak Out: 'I Thought We Were Dead'

Posted: Updated:

Jim and Karen Reynolds spoke out for the first time on Wednesday night. The couple who own the Mountain Vista Resort, said they were in the process of remodeling Unit 203, the same unit where Dorner had been hiding. They said they had not been inside the unit since Feb. 6.

Earlier reports, based on statements from law enforcement officials, indicated that it was a pair of housekeepers who had been tied up by the suspect.

The couple say when they entered the unit on Tuesday, they saw Dorner rushing towards them. They said they immediately recognized him from the news reports.

Mrs Reynolds said that Dorner seemed 'calm and methodical' when he approached them, but her first instinct when she saw him was to run away - and Dorner chased after her.

Dorner gagged the two and tied them up with zip ties. "I thought we were dead," Jim said. "Really, it was pretty scary."

With one person upstairs and the other downstairs, they were able to scoot over to each other and wriggle free.  Karen said she was then able to call 911 with her hands still behind her back.

The couple said Dorner did not talk about the shootings. They said Dorner told them he did not have a problem with them, he just wanted to clear his name.

When asked if they wanted part of the $1 million reward,  Karen said they were "happy to be alive and that the rest of our family is safe." They expressed condolences to the fallen deputy and other officers and thanked officers involved in the search.

Karen said they had mixed feelings about Dorner. "I didn't wish him dead," she said. "I prayed for him a lot and his family… it's awful."

JIM REYNOLDS says: "(He was going to kill you then?) When he had me laying on the ground, yes I really did.... I thought he changed his mind, he was just trying to calm us down, get us in there here and just going to do it. But once he got us bound, he went out to the bathroom real quick, which is real close, and came back with a couple of wash clothes, stuck one in each of our mouths. Then he... back in the living room..."

KAREN REYNOLDS says: "And he came in, like with a cord, and tied it (extension cords), tied it around our heads...."

JIM REYNOLDS says: "And then tied the cord through the mouth, round the back, tied it real tight."

KAREN REYNOLDS says: "And he put pillow cases..."

KAREN REYNOLDS says: "He had said, 'I just wanted to clear my name.'"

JIM REYNOLDS says: "'I don't have a problem with you, I just want to clear my name.'"

JIM REYNOLDS says: "We kind of scooted down and I went up, and she... And I grabbed the pillow case and then pulled it off trying to put my hands behind it. Then she pulled mine off. Then she got her gag off and then we both worked on trying to stand up."

KAREN REYNOLDS says: "He scooted over towards to bedroom door that he had closed, but he couldn't get up and couldn't reach... I mean, we were really bound. He couldn't get the door knob. I was able to roll onto my knees, and scoot over to the bed and actually get onto my feet and kind of shuffle to where he was and got the door open."
