Couples in love often share similar interests, finish each others' sentences and laugh at the same jokes. Now a new study suggests that their hearts may be to the same rhythm.
UCLA researchers conducted a series of exercises on about 30 couples. They were each connected to a heart rate and respiratory monitor, and they each sat a few away from each other in a quiet, calm room.
They found that couples' breathing and heart rate patterns matched up when they sat close to each other and they didn't even have to be holding hands or talking for it to happen.
Although the couples' heart rates and breathing patterns fell into sync, women tended to change theirs more to match their partners. In other words, women do more of the adjusting in a relationship to fall in sync with their partners.
It's interesting to note that when researchers mixed the couples up to do the same exercises with a stranger, their heart rates and breathing patterns did not fall into that matched pattern.
