FOX 9 photographer recalls own home invasion

SHOREVIEW, Minn. (KMSP) -

A photographer with FOX 9 News is sharing some advice after a scary evening at his Shoreview home: Keep your doors locked.

Wednesday night was anything but ordinary in the Weseman household after a sudden intruder began acting erratic and threatening their lives.

Russ Weseman, a photographer with FOX 9 who has covered many home invasions over the years, explained that he was held hostage inside his own home for 45 minutes.

The incident began at the couple's townhome in Shoreview at about 6 p.m. when 34-year-old Gary Anspach, who lives nearby, came crashing through the front door.

"As he was making his way through the house, he started taking off his clothes," Weseman recalled.

Weseman said he asked Anspach why he was stripping, but never got a reply.

"He just kept doing it," he said.

Anspach has a long criminal history, including charges of DWI, terroristic threats, assault, disorderly conduct and burglary -- but Weseman says it wasn't clear what the stranger wanted at the time.

"At one point, he picked my keys off the counter," Weseman said. "I'm like, 'Oh, thank God. He just wants the car. Take it. Take the TV. You want my wallet? Take my wallet. Just take it and go.'"

According to the police report, Anspach was screaming and threatening to blow their heads off as he ran through the home, kicking in a door and knocking pictures off the wall.

"He was running around pretending he was DEA," Weseman said.

Eventually, Weseman got Anspach to agree to let him and his wife leave.

"She got right up. She went to the door, and he grabbed her at the door and was like, 'You call the police, someone's going to get killed," Weseman recalled.

Anspach was arrested soon after by a deputy who was already in the area looking for him in connection with a previous encounter with someone else. Now, he's facing four felony charges, including kidnapping.

While his motive remains unclear, Weseman said it's clear that he will now double-check his doors are always locked.
