Bail For Suspect In School Abduction Case Set At $4 Million

PHILADELPHIA -

A day after FOX 29 cameras saw police take 19-year-old Christina Regusters into custody, she now stands charged with kidnapping, rape, conspiracy and 11 other crimes.

It's all thanks to two key pieces of evidence. Video from a private security camera in an alley behind the home, where police believe the 5-year-old girl was held, and an element of Reguster's DNA taken from a tee shirt worn by the kidnap victim.

"We believe, there's a very strong possibility that she is the one was in the garb," Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey told FOX 29.

While police say Regusters is at the heart of the kidnapping plot, her lawyer insists she is not the woman dressed in Muslim clothing seen on surveillance tape kidnapping the child from her kindergarten class at Bryant Elementary School a month ago.

"If you saw my client, you see that she's not of the build of the person who apparently took this little girl out of the school," said defense attorney W. Fred Harrison Jr., who represented Regusters at Friday's bail hearing.

That's where her bond was set at $4 million.

Police contend a camera in the alleyway caught Regusters walking with the little girl carrying a white coat, like the victim had been wearing, then lifting the little girl over a wall at the rear of the home where she was held captive.

District Attorney Seth Williams had some advice for Regusters.

"Unless she wants to spend the remainder of her life in prison,  she should probably give us some information so that we can find the other people responsible," Williams told Fox 29 Friday morning.

"I'm sure they're trying to squeeze her, there's no question about that," Harrison fired back.

Police also say Regusters worked at the Heavens Little Angels day care, where the victim attended an after-school program each day.

Regusters was suspended recently. No one at the daycare would speak with us Friday when we knocked on the door.

"She knew the little girl, and that's the only involvement I know that she has with the little girl," Harrison said.

"I'm at a loss for words," said single father Aaron Jones. He has a son at the same day care. He was stunned to learn of Regusters' connection here.

"I haven't had any problems with regards to my son going here, but it is kind of alarming as a parent," he said.

"We have a 5-year-old girl whose life has changed for ever, her family's life has changed forever," said another parent.

Regusters' attorney says his client voluntarily gave police a DNA sample and took a lie-detector test. However, he admits she failed several questions during that test.

He also represents three other people who police took Thursday from the home on Walton Avenue and says they have professed their innocence in this case. All three were released from police custody Friday morning.

No additional charges have been filed against anyone else.
