CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -
18 year old Janay McFarlane was fatally shot just hours after her younger sister Destini Warren attended President Barack Obama's speech at Hyde Park Career Academy on Friday.
In an emotional interview, McFarlane's mother Angela Blakely broke down in tears saying her daughter did not deserve to die.
"Every time I think about the way my child died it's hard to think about her dying like that because she didn't deserve it, she didn't deserve dying like that," said Blakely.
Police say the teen was visiting family and friends in North Chicago when she was shot in the head in an alley. She was reportedly with a friend who family members say was the intended target.
"Janay was a strong person, she was a beautiful person, she was a fun, loving person, she was just an all outgoing kind of person and again as I've told others, just being in Janay's presence is fun, she always has a way to make anybody smile," said Blakely.
For McFarlane's younger sister Destini Warren who sat just steps behind President Obama on Friday as he gave a speech about growing violence in Chicago and across the country - the tragedy is surreal.
"It really hurt me when I find out that it happened to my sister because I was just listening to... I was thinking about her dying when he was saying it and then later on they called me and told me it happened to my sister," said Warren.
Janay McFarlane attended Hyde Park Career Academy until she gave birth to her son Jayden last year. Family members describe a young woman with a bright future and big dreams abruptly cut short.
"She liked doing hair but she wanted to be in culinary arts," said Warren.
A makeshift memorial now sits in the spot where the former Hyde Park Career Academy student loss her life.
Funeral arrangements are underway. The Lake County State's Attorney Office says the two people being questioned in McFarlane's death have not been charged. McFarlane leaves behind her son, parents, younger sister and two older brothers.
