Vacant Detroit house fire damages home next door; arson suspected

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (myFOXDetroit.com) -

Thick smoke and orange flames could be seen shooting out of a long-abandoned home on Detroit's northwest side late Sunday.

Detroit fire fighters worked in the freezing cold temperatures to contain the blaze, and did their best to keep the blaze from spreading to the house next door.

"We got calls from neighbors, and got here as quick as we could," said Detroit Fire Captain Derrick Williams.

Fox 2's Ronnie Dahl spoke with the lady who lives next door. She arrived home and saw the blaze, as a hopeless feeling set in.

She could only stand by and watch as a steady stream of water doused the flames. The heat damaged her car and melted the siding, but it stopped there.

All things considered, she got lucky.

The flames are believed to be the work of yet another arsonist. Fire fighters call them firebugs.

They're a dangerous bunch, putting the lives of fire fighters at risk on a regular basis, and destroying neighborhoods, one house at a time.
