Meadowlands Will Not See Renovation In Time For Super Bowl

Posted: Updated:
MEADOWLANDS, N.J. -

The Super Bowl is moving north for next year's showdown, but New Jersey residents want to clean up a few things before football fans start pouring in.

Gov. Chris Christie has called the Meadowlands complex next to the Met-Life Stadium, "the ugliest building in the world," and he would like the exterior to be redone in time for the big game in 2014.

However, the property's developers said they do not think the renovation is likely to happen in that timeframe.

The developers are working on creating a retail and entertainment complex at the Meadowlands known as "American Dream." They said they hope to finalize acquiring the land by this spring and have construction completed in two years, long after Super Bowl crowds have disappeared.

"The Super Bowl is a one-week experience; a great experience, but for one week," company spokesman, Alan Marcus said. "American Dream is going to be here for decades if not centuries."

Marcus said the new complex will feature a Dreamworks water park and an amusement park.

Even the two-year timeframe developers have planned is only possible if the acquisition process goes smoothly in the coming months.
