Home run! Baseball's spring training begins

Posted: Updated:
PEORIA, Ariz. -

It's opening day for spring training here in the valley, and what a difference a day makes.

Thursday morning Salt River Fields was blanketed in snow. Today -- the fields are green and ready for tomorrow's first D'backs game.

Meanwhile in Peoria, the Mariners and Padres took the field.

Baseball is back. For the players, the goal is to score runs, but young fans are looking to score signatures.

"I've come here every year for like the last 4 or 5 years," says Seattle Mariners fan Simon Lindberg.

Armed with a sharpie and ball, 12-year old Simon heads down the 1st base line.

"That's where it's easier to hand it to them so they can take it and give them back," he explains.

On his spring training trips, Simon has come up with a game plan for getting autographs.

"'Can you come over here and sign, will you sign this?' Kind of try to get their attention. Usually they respond," he says.

When they players move, so does Simon, from the bullpen then over to the 3rd base line.

Simon's day was made when infielder Kyle Seager ran his way just moments before the game.

"Here ya go buddy," says Seagar. "Thank you!" says Simon.
