Pewabic Pottery will host its 19th annual Empty Bowls fundraiser to benefit Gleaners Community Food Bank on Saturday, Feb. 23 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Pewabic Pottery located at 10125 E. Jefferson Ave. in Detroit.
Guests can purchase a bowl created by Pewabic staff, local artists or students for $5 to $25 and will receive soup and bread donated from local restaurants, including Beverly Hills Grill, Bona-Ventures Bread Company L3C, Lunchtime Detroit, Polish Village Café, Russell Street Deli, Sindbads, St. John's Hospital, Vivio's and Zoup.
Guests are invited into enjoy soup in the upstairs gallery or tile showroom until 2 p.m. and shopping until 6 p.m.
One hundred percent of proceeds from the event are donated to Gleaners Community Food Bank. For each dollar raised, Gleaner's can provide three meals to someone in need. Last year, Pewabic's Empty Bowls event raised $8,706 which helped provide more than 26,000 meals.
Pewabic Pottery is a non-profit arts and cultural organization and National Historic Landmark which is dedicated to engaging people of all ages in learning experiences with contemporary ceramic art and artists while preserving its historic legacy.

Beef Vegetable Barley
1T olive oil
2# sirloin strip ends-diced ½ inch pieces
salt and pepper
2c diced carrots-1/2 inch
2c diced celery-1/2 inch
1c chopped yellow onion
2c sliced button mushrooms
1c chopped roma tomatoes-blanched and peeled
2T chopped garlic
10c beef broth
1c pearl barley
Heat olive oil in large pot. Season strip ends and cook over medium heat, stirring for 10 minutes until browned. Remove. Add vegetables and garlic to pot. Cook until vegetables brown. Add remaining ingredients. Stir. Bring to boil. Lower heat and simmer 1 hour. Season with salt and pepper.
