MADISON HEIGHTS, Mich. (WJBK) -

People often say where are the police when you need them?  Two men were in desperate need of an officer when they were being beaten inside a car wash stall.  Due to good timing and good instincts a cop came.

It was late Friday night when a Madison Heights police officer, a 15 year veteran of the force, just finished a full day.

Lieutenant Bob Anderson said he "was on the way home from working a double shift" when he noticed a car parked close to a wall inside a Walgreens parking lot and thought it was suspicious.

"He turned around on John R about a block south of there," Anderson explained.  "That's when he witnessed the assault in progress at the car wash."

A fight but it was not a fair one.  Twin brothers from Rochester Hills were no match for the three young men who were on the attack robbing them and beating them brutally with baseball bats.  I bet they never thought a cop would witness their crime.

He quickly called 9-1-1, then Anderson said, "Our officer's first priority was, in his mind, to get that license plate, which he did."

The officer followed the suspects as far as he could.  We were told they bailed in their getaway car, but they left some baggage behind.

"Jason Morgan was left at the scene by his friends," said Anderson.

Police later arrested 29-year-old Morgan and another suspect, 28-year-old Shawn Nesbitt.  They are both from Clinton Township.  Their bonds are set at $1.5 million.

"This was a very violent crime.  These two victims were innocently beaten," Anderson remarked.  "It appears that the crime was a retaliation, but it was the wrong target."

Two 35-year-old men who were defenseless against their attackers.

"Got seriously beat down, repeatedly hit with these baseball bats amongst their head and their body," Anderson said.   "One brother reports that he was struck at least 20 times."

If it were not for the keen instincts of that one cop, Anderson said, "We might be investigating a homicide at this time."

Ironically as we were putting this story together the victims showed up at the car wash.  One said he had to get staples in the back of his head and his wrist is broken.  The other said "they messed my spleen up" and that he had to get 20 staples in his head.

"I thought I was going to get killed with [those] bats hitting me all the time.  They kept on kicking me and robbed me for my wallet and my money," one of the victims said.

They also expressed their gratitude to the officer.
