Friend of Pistorius speaks out about murder accusation

Posted: Updated:

Olympic Gold Medalist Roland Schoeman, in the valley for a swimming competition, is a friend of Oscar Pistorius.

"South Africa has never had a lawsuit like this or any sort of case like this, O.J. Simpson-eske," said Schoeman.

South African Olympian Schoeman is heartbroken over the murder accusations centered around his friend Oscar Pistorius and the death of Pistorius' girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

The two grew up in the same town and met back in 2004 at a press conference after the Olympic games.

"One can't really fathom to do something as devastating as what has been done. To see a beautiful woman like that being murdered, you think, could he?" said Schoeman.
The sprint swimmer and three-time Olympic medalist says he and Pistorius would frequently hang out together back home at BBQ's.

Schoeman is trying to gain some clarity and sort through the media headlines and rumors.

"I've heard 10..different amounts of shots. He was on his stumps, then he wasn't, ballistics say something," said Schoeman. "They say they found testosterone, they say they found steroids, or is it a homeopathic solution? It is steroids. No one knows what is going on," said Schoeman.

The country is split over the murder accusation. He says South Africa is a tight knit community with few celebrities.

The country holds Olympic athletes to the highest degree.

"In South Africa, it's such a close society, anyone who is a hero so to say, you're put on a pedestal and for someone like that to do what just happened, it is disappointing," said Schoeman.

When asked if he thought his friend was capable of murder, Schoeman said, "I never think anyone is, but sometimes people just seem to snap".

Pistorius' next court appearance is set for June 4th.
