Rally at State Capitol to remember Trayvon Martin - Fox 2 News Headlines

Gun rally held at state Capitol on anniversary of Trayvon Martin shooting

A gun control rally was held at the Georgia state Capitol on Tuesday to mark the one year anniversary of the shooting death of Trayvon Martin.

Martin was allegedly shot and killed by George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch captain in Florida.

Zimmerman is expected to use the "stand your ground" law as a defense. That law says a person may justifiably use force in self-defense.

Martin's death sparked a national conversation about gun rights.

The rally is sponsored, in part, by Democratic State Senator Vincent Fort, who said he's introduced legislation to modify Georgia's "stand your ground law."

"To the extent that it would not be applicable in public places. If you're not in danger, you should retreat," Fort said.

Fort says he thinks there needs to be a stronger push to curb gun violence, including a ban on assault weapons, limits on ammunition and magazine clips.

"We are responding to what we feel is the public's increased awareness and interest in the issue of gun safety. We think too many young people, too many children are dying when legislators and politicians ought to be standing up for them," said Fort.

Fort is also calling universal background checks, which he says polls show that most Georgians support.

"The overwhelming majority of Georgians -- more than 75 percent -- want universal background checks.  But you know what the problem is? We're not loud enough," Fort said at the rally.

Luke Crawford was part of a small contingent of pro-gun rights advocates at the rally. He said that he believes removing guns can only endanger citizens.

"One of the main ways we can resolve this, I think, is to get rid of these gun-free zones because all they are are killing grounds for these crazed people," Crawford said.

Fort didn't make any predictions on his pending legislation under the Republican-controlled Gold Dome.
