Man accused of gas thefts from 16 stations

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A 21-year-old Long Island man is accused of filling up at 16 gas stations, then driving away without paying.

Suffolk County Police say that Walter Amerbach of Smithtown was filling up for free over a period of four months.

They say he would drive his Jeep to the full service pumps, ask for the attendant to fill up his tank, and then drive off without paying.

They say the attendant at a station on Tuesday got his license plate number and police found his SUV outside the Planet Fitness gym on Sunrise Highway in Bay Shore.

Amerbach was awaiting arraignment Wednesday on 11 petit larceny charges.
