Atlanta grandmother concerned about $7K water bill

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

An Atlanta grandmother says her water bill has grown to more than $7,000. Lula Mae Horton said that she's frustrated trying to get answers from City Hall.

Horton said that she's lived at the house for 30 years and the bill has typically been $50 to$60 a month. She said that early last year, the bills started climbing despite the fact that only her and her granddaughter live in the home.

Horton said that she found out through a neighbor that a construction crew knocked out a hole in a pipe in her front yard. She said that a water department supervisor came out to her home and told her that the hole wasn't her fault.

An Atlanta Department of Watershed Management spokesperson told FOX 5's Morse Diggs that they are aware there is a leak in the yard.

The department has not threatened to cut Horton's water off, but she said that she wants the bill addressed.

After this story aired, the mayor's office contacted FOX 5 and pledged that Horton would not be responsible for the bill. City officials said they will get on the case immediately and try to reach a resolution.
