Idol Across America kicks off in New York

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Idol Across America kicked off Friday in New York City thanks to Ryan Seacrest.

An American Idol-branded microphone will make its journey to 13 cities across the U.S. and will travel more than 5,000 miles to Los Angeles where it will arrive in time for the top 10 live performance show on March 13.

Former NYPD officer Daniel Rodriguez performed the national anthem in News Corp. Plaza in Midtown and then had the honor of taking the microphone on its inaugural move.

What better way to kick off an Idol event than to have live entertainment from the Columbia University Glee Club.

Along the way the microphone will be carried by Idol fans and some former Idols.
