WOODSTOCK, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -
A southwest suburban man was charged Friday with driving drunk and causing a crash that killed a 4-year-old girl, who was ejected from a vehicle, last fall.
After a five-month investigation, Leonardo R. Martinez, 43, driver of a 2011 Infiniti QX56 involved in the crash, was charged with one felony count of aggravated DUI and two misdemeanor counts of DUI, according to the McHenry County Sheriff's office.
Martinez, of the 600 block of Edgewater Court in New Lenox, also received two traffic violations for failing to stop at a stop sign and failure to use due care.
The Infiniti was southbound on Millstream Road in unincorporated Seneca Township when it collided with a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Lerado that was westbound on Route 176, according to a release from the sheriff's office.
The Infiniti failed to stop for the stop sign, the release said. Both vehicles exited the roadway and struck a guardrail before coming to a stop.
The 4-year-old girl was ejected from the Jeep and pronounced dead on arrival at Centegra Medical Center in Woodstock. The 30-year-old driver of the Jeep refused treatment, while a 33-year-old woman and 1-year-old child in the Jeep were treated at Centegra for minor injuries.
Martinez and his 34-year-old female passenger were also taken to Centegra with minor injuries. It is unknown if any or all occupants were wearing seatbelts.
Bond was set Monday at $100,000 for Martinez, who is scheduled to appear in court in Woodstock on March 20.
