Why researchers say you should be eating leafy greens

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -

Mom was and is right.  You do need to eat your greens.  Why?  Some very smart scientists say those greens can really protect you.

It turns out your immune cell population, which is so important for intestinal health, might be controlled by leafy greens in your diet.

These immune cells are found in the lining of the digestive system.  They protect your body from bad bacteria.  They are also believed to play an important role in controlling food allergies, inflammatory diseases, obesity and may even prevent the development of certain bowel cancers.

A research team found a gene helps produce these immune cells, and that gene responds to food we eat, specifically leafy greens.

The study is in the journal "Nature Immunology".
