BURBANK, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -
A Mercedes-Benz fleeing Chicago Police crashed into a police vehicle on the Southwest Side, then fled to nearby Burbank, putting area schools in the southwest suburb on lockdown as the search continued.
A Chicago Lawn District tactical unit sergeant saw the black Mercedes-Benz driving erratically near South Ashland Avenue and West 83rd Street, and pulled it over, Chicago Police said.
When the officer approached the car, which had three males inside, the driver fled and Chicago Lawn District officers gave chase. During the pursuit, the vehicle reversed direction and struck a police vehicle. No injures were reported in the crash, Chicago Police said.
The Mercedes then fled into Burbank and Chicago officers terminated the pursuit and notified Burbank police.
A short time later, a witness in Burbank called 911 at 1:55 p.m. to report three people running from a vehicle in the 5700 block of 83rd Place in the southwest suburb, according to Burbank police.
Burbank police set up a perimeter and arrested one of the suspects near South Central Avenue and West 87th Street.
Burbank schools were placed on lockdown as a precaution while authorities searched the area with the help of helicopters, Burbank police said. Two officers were placed at nearby Luther Burbank and Liberty Junior High schools, but the area was soon deemed safe and students released.
Burbank police continue to search the area Wednesday evening.
The suspect was turned over to Chicago Police and remains in the Chicago Lawn District lockup Wednesday night with charges pending, according to Chicago Police.
