SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -

What can a horse teach us? Some kids are learning the answer to that question -- thanks to a program that pairs horses with kids.

This sweet quarter horse called Esperanza is blind and sick. Her owners couldn't take care of her anymore.

Amanda Moore took her in.

"Horses are amazing animals and they have the ability to make us see things differently," says Amanda Moore of Reigning Grace Ranch Rescue.

Esperanza now lives at Reigning Grace Ranch Rescue in Rio Verde. She will soon join the mentorship program. The idea is to pair troubled kids with rescue horses like Esperanza.

"We have a lot of children at the ranch that come from backgrounds that are not the norm. We put them together, they heal each other."

Elizabeth Jasmine loves the idea. She understands what these horses are going through. She's had some tough times herself.

"Being out here with the horses kind of teaches you like what's going on in your life and teaches you how to fix it," says Krisan Jewel.

Her sisters were in foster care until they found a new home and a new life, just like all of these horses, and it's fun.

"You get to see how it feels on the horse, you get a nice view and you get to learn," says Annie Bernice.

It's not all fun. The kids have to help take care of the horses. With 30 horses there's a lot of mucking to do and everyone has to muck or they don't get to ride. It's part of the program.

The program is working, not just for the kids and their families, but for the horses too.

This is a nonprofit program, and kids from all over the valley are welcome.
