Local grandmother still on the ice at age 85

Phyllis Braun, 85 Phyllis Braun, 85
WATERFORD, Mich. (WJBK) -

She glides on the ice with grace and elegance and for Phyllis Braun it comes with years of practice.

Phyllis is 85 years old, but this young lady, that's just a number.

"It's so enjoyable," said Braun. "People have to give a go with whatever it is and not think about age."

Phyllis was inspired to take to the ice long ago by her granddaughter, an ice skating fan who want to take a lesson from Olympian Debi Thomas. Knowing that her granddaughter's wish was highly unlikely, she stepped in and learned to skate. Sadly, Braun's granddaughter died of cancer of at age 15. But Braun kept skating.

"It's been a blessing for me and I think I've fulfilled her wish."

Braun has skated for years with a group called the Rusty Blades at the Lakeland Arena in Waterford.

Braun suffers from macular degeneration, but she isn't letting it stop her.

"It's just a great past time."
