AEG Is Off The Market, Lieweke Leaving

Posted: Updated:
Los Angeles, CA -

AEG is off the market, and Tim Lieweke is leaving. Lieweke has been called by some media outlets, the most influential man in LA sports.

AEG put out a statement this morning, Phil Anschutz says he's going to take a more active role in the company and he has appointed a new CEO.  AEG's statement says:  Dan Beckerman will assume the position of President and CEO. Beckerman joined AEG more than 15 years ago and served as the company's CFO and COO.

About Tim, AEG said,  "We appreciate the role Tim has played in the development of AEG, and thank him for the many contributions he has made to the Company. We wish him well in his new endeavors," said Mr. Anschutz.

Apparently Phil Anschutz couldn't get his price. Some reports had the whole lot place at $8 billion.   He was apparently hoping to get a group like Guggenheim to pay an outrageous price like they did for the Dodgers.  It didn't happen and he wasn't desperate to sell.  Think of AEG like a fine piece of art.  He wanted to test the water to see if there was a buyer.

What can we infer about the NFL?  It's still in the works. But from what I hear, the LA city leaders need to stop focusing on "Farmer's Field" as the only possible site for a return of the NFL.  The NFL is continuing to look at several other  sites around Southern California.  To update you,  I contacted Stan Kasten of the Dodgers to find out what has been discussed about Dodger Stadium and he doesn't want to comment.  Ed Roski still is promoting his site out in Industry, but no one really loves that location.

As for any other sites, it's a mystery but something could pop up.

I met the folks from Gunnar Optiks at CES this year and they had something new to show me. The Intercepts. I have a big head, these are big frames, it was kismet but do they work as good as they look? We'll see.
