'Kiss Of The Irish' this Weekend, But Don't Push Your Luck

Posted: Updated:
Los Angeles, CA -

Lots of people are preparing for St. Patrick's Day, especially the partiers looking forward to having lots of fun this this holiday weekend, drinking lots of green beer, wearing fun green clothes. You know the drill. It's the same every year.

There will be big parties like what's being planned at LA Live for the third year in a row. There will be little ones at neighborhood bars like Witches Brew in North Hills where they are planning to serve corned beef and cabbage -- not to mention their green drink specials.

Police are planning too with sobriety check points in areas like West LA, Hollywood and north Hollywood. There will be be plenty of uniformed officers in black and white squad cars. What you won't see, though, are the undercover cops around liquor stores and other places where you can buy beer and liquor. They'll be deployed to make sure people under 21 aren't breaking the law and buying booze.

Law enforcement is out to crack down on DUIs. Last year, LAPD arrested nearly 15,000 people. There were about 2,400 wrecks involving drivers who were under the influence.

At the Witches Brew, the bartender there tells me she expects big business this weekend, but is trained to be concerned and on the outlook for people having a drink too many. She's even driven those over the limit to their homes since most of the people who go to the neighborhood bar live in the neighborhood. But, that's not always the case. So, police say before you party, pick your designated driver or make your plan to use a taxi or public transportation. Leave the driving to someone else, they say.

And, a big point they make every holiday where you might have alcohol is "buzzed driving is drunk driving." Being impaired while driving and getting a DUI can cost big bucks. Estimates are $16,000 for the first one after all your legal costs, and $7,000 more if you are a teen.

Have fun this weekend, but be safe!
