NJ bakery shuts; sugar found in sugar-free items

Posted: Updated:

CLIFTON, N.J. (AP) - A New Jersey bakery has closed after federal officials found sugar in sugar-free items and fat content well above what was on the labels.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says a federal judge approved an injunction against Clifton-based Butterfly Bakery and its president for unlawfully distributing misbranded food.

The FDA says tests showed the company's product labeling was false and misleading.

Laboratory analysis found certain foods labeled sugar-free contained sugar. Another had 360% in excess of the saturated fat listed on the label.

The company, on its Facebook page, says it acknowledges the claims made by the FDA and voluntarily entered into the decree halting business.

The company says the FDA's concerns involved only 3 of its 45 products.
