CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -
Fox 32 News has learned tonight that the White House has decided to nominate former federal prosecutor Zachary Fardon to serve as the next U.S. Attorney in the Northern District of Illinois. Fardon was one of four finalists originally under consideration by the White House to replace Patrick Fitzgerald.
There's been no public announcement yet from the White House.
Fardon is one of two finalists who the White House has been considering for several weeks. The other is Chicago attorney Lori Lightfoot.
The candidates' names were submitted by Illinois Senators Dick Durbin and Mark Kirk to the White House.
Fitzgerald resigned last May. During his 11 years in office, Illinois governors Rod Blagojevich and George Ryan were both convicted on corruption charges and sentenced to lengthy terms in prison.
Working under Fitzgerald, Fardon was a member of the prosecution team which tried the George Ryan case.
Fardon later went to work for the law firm of Latham and Watkins, where according to the firm's website. he has focused on internal investigations, government investigations, white collar defense and business litigation.
Once he is formally nominated, the nomination will go to the Senate Judiciary Committee, and then to the entire Senate, for confirmation.
Reached today, Fardon declined to comment. Lori Lightfoot could not be reached for comment.
