Police shoot, kill armed man at downtown Phoenix condo

Phoenix Police shot and killed an armed suspect after responding to a domestic violence call at a condo on Sunday night.

Police swarmed 7th Street and Washington in downtown Phoenix after officers shot and killed a domestic violence suspect at the Renaissance Park condos.

Matt McDonald lives at the condos and was sitting at nearby restaurant when he saw police initially respond to the domestic violence call around 6:30 p.m.

"About five minutes later I heard four or five gunshots," said McDonald. "Literally within a few minutes the place had probably 30 policemen and the helicopter showed up."

Phoenix Police spokesperson Sgt. Tommy Thompson says two officers responded to the domestic violence call around 6:30 p.m.

Thompson says domestic violence calls are some of the most deadly calls police officers respond to.

"When they got to the door, they were contacted. The individual had a gun, our officers felt threatened by that gun and they shot the individual," said Thompson.

Investigators say the suspect died at the scene. He was later identified as 46-year-old William Alfred Shaw. He had been involved in a domestic dispute with his wife, a 41-year-old woman, and he had damaged things inside the apartment.

The 26-year-old officer who fired the shot, a 5-year veteran of the force, suffered minor injuries. He received some cuts to his hands and legs. He will be placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure.

McDonald says the shooting is an odd occurrence for the condos that are nearby the Children's Museum and within walking distance to restaurants at Heritage Park and Chase Field.

"It's a very quiet place, a beautiful quiet neighborhood. Never something like this," said McDonald.
