5-year-old child playing with gun fires shot

GILBERT, Ariz. -

What could've become a tragic event in Gilbert on Saturday fortunately did not turn out that way. Police say a 5-year-old boy removed a handgun and shotgun from a closet and one of them discharged in the yard.

It happened about 10:30 a.m. Saturday in a neighborhood near Guadalupe and Lindsay Roads.

The boy retrieved the firearms from the master bedroom closet and went outside. He dropped the shotgun on the ground and fired one round from the handgun towards the east.

Luckily, no one was injured, and there was no property damage.

Gilbert Police and CPS arrived at the scene. They learned that a 27-year-old female babysitter was watching six children at the home -- four of them lived at the home and two of them were the babysitter's children. It is not clear which child fired the gun.

Police are reminding adults to talk to kids about the potential dangers of firearms and say it is the gun owner's responsibility to ensure their firearm does not fall into the wrong hands.

They recommend that firearms be stored unloaded in a firearm safe or locker.

The babysitter and the gun's owner were not cited, but CPS is still investigating.
