Conn. bill would control size of house numbers

Posted: Updated:

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - A bill that would require homeowners to prominently display the street number assigned to their house is moving through the General Assembly.

The proposal cleared the Public Safety and Security Committee on Thursday, passing 19-5. It now moves to the House of Representatives for further action.

The bill requires numbers, at least four inches high, to be located on the exterior front of the building, or on a post, sign, mailbox or other device that's located between the building and the street.

Fairfield Rep. Brenda Kupchick supports the bill. She said she's heard complaints from fire and police officials who say the lack of house numbers causes problems for first responders trying to locate homes when responding to emergencies.

But Waterbury Rep. Anthony D'Amelio said the bill was "too far-reaching."
