PHILADELPHIA -

Philadelphia police are searching for the man who investigators say pretended to be a water department employee, entered the home of an elderly woman and stole more than $2,000 worth of jewelry.

Police say the home invasion happened on the 9700 block of Morefield Road.

The man entered the home and then forced a woman inside into her bathroom, police said.

The suspect took the jewelry and left the home.

Police say the woman was not harmed physically.

We want to remind you of some safety tips:

  • Before you let anyone inside your house, ask for ID.
  • All Philadelphia utility employees will have a photo id and a shirt or uniform with the company logo on it.
  • If they have all of these credentials but you are still unsure, call the agency to verify the person's employment.
  • This goes for all utility companies in Philadelphia, including PECO, PGW, Verizon and Comcast.
