Landmark Cobb County smokestack being removed

Posted: Updated:
COBB COUNTY, Ga. -

For decades, south Cobb County travelers have been greeted by a smokestack that towered over the skyline. It won't be up for long, as the old landmark is being removed one brick at a time.

"We've come down about 100 feet. We've got about 735 feet to go, but we want to do it in the safest and most efficient way we can," said Georgia Power's Mark Williams.

Williams says the smokestack was built along with plant Jack McDonough - Atkinson in the 1960s, when coal was primarily used to supply electricity.

"We replaced the coal units there with three highly efficient natural gas units. They supply about 840 megawatts each. Combined, those units power about 600,000 plus Atlanta homes," said Williams.

The demolition process is more efficient also. Workers are starting from the top and taking it down brick by brick.

"As we demolish and dislodge the bricks, they're going down into the stack and then they'll be collected from the bottom of the stack. So, they're not falling outside and creating any kind of safety issues," Williams said.

The conversion will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by half and mercury emissions by 95 percent. Williams says while those traveling through south Cobb County will notice a change in the skyline, it's a change for the better.

"They'll notice it going or dropping, but I think they'll appreciate the cleaner electricity that we're able to generate there at the plant there now," said Williams.

Demolition is expected to be completed by July or August.
