High School Creates Unisex Bathrooms For Students

Posted: Updated:
PORTLAND, Ore. -

Transgender students in Oregon spoke up, and now a public high school has installed special, unisex bathrooms.

Grant High School has 10 transgender students who felt uncomfortable using the traditional bathroom facilities, so the school took action and created six unisex bathroom stalls.

"I started hormone replacement therapy about a month ago," one transgender student, Scott Morrison said, "and I was just worried about—I'm going to start to look different, and sound different, and it's going to be weird going into either restroom."

"One of the top reasons that transgender students drop out of high school is because they feel they don't have somewhere safe to go to the bathroom," the school's vice principal, Kristyn Westphal said.

Since the stalls opened, other school districts have expressed interest in installing similar bathrooms.
