Group rides to Gold Dome to improve conditions for cyclists

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Hundreds of people grabbed their bicycles and took to the roads for the 8th Annual Georgia Rides to the Capitol on Tuesday. They rode in support of better conditions for cyclists.

It's the largest one-day cycling awareness event in the state. Event director, Decatur Commissioner, and owner of Bicycle South, Fred Boykin, says they've had as many as 1,800 riders show up for the event in the past.

Many elected officials took part, including Georgia's Lieutenant Governor, Casey Cagle.

Last year, they were able to advocate with the Department of Transportation for a "complete streets policy." This year, Georgia Rides to the Capitol hopes to help implement that same policy. They want new roads to be thought of not only for vehicles but for cyclists, and pedestrians.

"This is where, so to speak, the rubber meets the road. The goal is to make it more suitable for all users. We expect 45 mayors and elected officials to participate in the event so it has a big turnout. It's a lot of fun," said Boykin.

The event actually started years ago as a bet between the mayors of Roswell and Decatur of how many people each could get involved. Now, those two routes still serve as the main police escorted ride.
