CPS welcoming schools to receive 'learning gardens'

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Dozens of Chicago schools will be planting "learning gardens" as part of the massive school overhaul plan.

Mayor Emanuel and school chief Barbara Byrd-Bennett announced the new gardens Tuesday. They'll be planted at up to 50 "welcoming schools" -- where students whose schools have been closed or combined will attend.

The learning gardens give kids a hands-on experience with plants, and help them learn about nutrition and science.

Planting will begin this spring.
