Feds: cop claimed disability while singing in punk band

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Cousin Sleaze is a punk rock band from Brooklyn. Chris Inserra, 31, is the lead singer. He is also a Port Authority police officer.

Investigators say Inserra claimed to have a "debilitating" right arm injury that he suffered on the job in 2010, leaving him unable to bend it. He was out of work, with full pay, until March 2012.

But prosecutors say that during that whole time, Inserra was on tour with his band, fist-pumping to the fast-paced and aggressive music onstage, playing at clubs in New York, New Jersey, Florida and Maryland.

Photos and videos show Inserra rocking out at some of their shows, "repeatedly moving his arms in a punching motion" and "violently flailing his arm in an up-and-down motion," according to the criminal complaint.

Inserra said nothing as he and his union representative left federal court in Brooklyn on Tuesday. He is charged with mail fraud.

Prosecutors say that while out of work Inserra collected two disability checks from the insurance company Aflac totaling $31,486 on top of his $90,000 per year Port Authority salary. He started with the Port Authority in 2007, assigned to the World Trade Center. He has been suspended without pay.

Cousin Sleaze just released an album called "Sick Maniacs." One of the songs is titled "My Sweet Disgrace." Perhaps another should be called "Poetic Justice."

Mayor Bill de Blasio won't be reimbursing the city for personal travels that involve his security detail. "We have followed the conflict of interest board guidelines. I am following their guidelines to the letter," said de Blasio. The mayor has been heavily criticized for not paying the city back for travel expenses. Attention around the issue started last week when de Blasio was spotted not paying for a subway ride to Barclays Center while on official business.
