Off-Duty Police Officer Struck By Hit-And-Run Driver

PHILADELPHIA -

An off-duty police officer is in the hospital Wednesday morning after he was struck by a vehicle overnight in Kensington.

The off-duty officer was walking home from a local establishment at 3:30 a.m. after it closed when he was run down by either an SUV or a minivan on East Cumberland Street near Cedar Street, right near where he lives, in the Kensington section of Philadelphia.

Police are still trying to figure out what caused the accident.

The officer is being treated at Hahnemann University Hospital, which is where FOX 29's Steve Keeley was reporting from Wednesday morning. The officer received staples to close a bad cut to his head but, amazingly, does not appear to have broken any bones in the incident.

Police think he cut his head smashed the windshield, and then his body broke off a windshield wiper arm, which was left behind in the street at the scene of the hit-and-run. Also left behind was glass, so police believe the vehicle's windshield is smashed for sure.

He was found getting sick against a car he was probably thrown into.

The officer's family and girlfriend were at the hospital with him early Wednesday, grateful he was not hurt a whole lot worse.

The four-year force veteran normally works the 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. shift in the 3rd District but happened to be off this morning.

No witnesses have come forward yet, but investigators said they plan to go back out to the scene at daylight, hoping to find homeowners there on the street with private surveillance cameras.
