Kwame Kilpatrick to remain in prison, judge refuses to release former Detroit mayor

DETROIT (WJBK) -

A federal judge has refused to release Kwame Kilpatrick from prison prior to his formal sentencing on corruption charges.

U.S. District Judge Nancy Edmunds denied Kilpatrick's motion to be released on bond in a ruling Wednesday.

Earlier this week, lawyer Jim Thomas argued that Kilpatrick should be released, in part, because of an injured knee that wasn't given proper medical attention.

"His requests for medical treatment over the past weeks at Milan Detention Center have not yet been met in any meaningful way," Thomas wrote.

Edmunds, however, disagreed. "Prisons address these kinds of medical issues all the time," she said in her ruling.

She added that Kilpatrick failed to demonstrate that he is not a flight risk. ""Kilpatrick has a history of lying to or misleading courts, as well as his probation and parole officers, including lying about his assets," Edmunds wrote.

Kilpatrick faces up to 20 years or more in federal prison after being found guilty of 24 charges, including racketeering conspiracy.
