Little girls found after harrowing walk in the woods

LAKELAND (FOX 13) -

A hankering to see horses led Aubrey and Grace Shaffer on a walk they'll never forget.

The two faithfully followed a teenage neighbor deep into a wooded area behind their Lakeland home late Monday afternoon. Soon after, the sun dropped. So did temperatures.

"I was shaking to death like a little Chihuahua," said 6-year old Grace Shaffer.

The trio spent hours trying to track their way back home.

"I was just thinking, I want to go home. That's all that was going through my head," said Grace's pal 9-year old Aubrey Shaffer.

Meanwhile, their mom called the Polk County Sheriff's Office.

"I was going crazy. I just knew I wanted my babies back," said Grace's mom Missi Shaffer.

The girls were lost about four miles away from home when Aubrey remembered something she was given in case of an emergency: her grandmother's old cell phone.

"It has no service, it can just call 911 and that's it," Aubrey said.

That was enough to help deputies pinpoint the girls' location in the thick of the woods. Grace slipped off her light-up sneakers to wave deputies in.

Four hours after they were first reported missing, the girls were finally returned home to their panicked parent's arms.

"I don't think they'll be going on adventures anymore. I think the rest of their spring break will be just fine now that they're home," Missi laughed.

The Shaffer sisters agree, saying they'll take pajamas and puzzles over another adventure any day of the week.
