McCowan sentenced to 60 years in Amanda Bach murder

VALPARAISO, Ind. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Dustin McCowan, 20, received a 60-year prison sentence Thursday for the murder of his former girlfriend, 19-year-old Amanda Bach, in September 2001.

The Valparaiso man plans to appeal the case, defense attorney John Vouga said, but Vouga also asked that McCowan be given a public defender, the Post-Tribune is reporting.

Porter Superior Judge William Alexa granted that request.

Murder in Indiana carries a 45- to 65-year-sentence, and Alexa cited items from McCowan's past—including ones not brought up at trial—for his sentencing decision.

During the roughly two-hour sentencing hearing, Alexa warned the audience that any outbursts would end with five days in Porter County Jail for contempt of court after a McCowan supporter stormed out, slamming the courtroom doors.

Alexa also warned the Bach's mother during victim impact statements about slurs to McCowan's family.
