The Border Patrol thwarted a dangerous human smuggling attempt in which 7 Mexican Nationals were hiding in a very chilly semi-tractor trailer.
Agents at the Highway 86 checkpoint in Salton City, Calif. stopped a 50-year-old driver early Thursday morning. A canine detection team alerted to the vehicle, and it was referred to secondary inspection.
Agents discovered 7 illegal immigrants -- one female and six males, ranging in age from 20 to 52 -- hidden in the trailer with a load of watermelons.
The trailer's temperature was 48 degrees.
The driver, a citizen of Mexico, was also illegally present in the U.S. He is facing federal human smuggling charges. Everyone was apprehended and the vehicle was seized.
