Did You Sniff Out These Google April Fools' Day Pranks?

Posted: Updated:

Google's controversial Easter Sunday doodle of labor leader Cesar Chavez was no joke, but apparently its new smell search engine is.

A video announcing Google Nose Beta – a feature that allows users to search the internet for scents – should have smelled a little fishy.

Google promised the product will quote "offer the sharpest olfactory experience available," and described advanced technology that "temporarily aligns molecules to emulate a particular scent."

And if that didn't pass the smell test, then maybe the application's "mobile aroma indexing program" and its "fifteen million scentibyte database of smells from around the world" should have.

Google also described a mobile phone "android ambient odor detections" app that would allow you to collect smells on your phone.

Well, Google Nose is not the company's latest product, but its latest April Fools' Day prank.

Of course, you never know.

Also for the April 1 festivities the company added a "Treasure Maps" feature to its popular maps icon.

And website managers who use Google Analytics might have been curious to see visitors to their site from an off-shore location that, when hovered over, displayed as "International Space Station Control Room." Of course, when you went to see how many viewers, it said "41." And the pages the content they were viewing? "April Fools' Day."

(Not that anyone here would have fallen for something that silly...)

The pranks come a day after a bunch of conservatives took to Twitter to express their anger over an Easter Google Doodle showing Chavez, who would have turned 86-years-old Sunday.

But conservatives were angry with the search giant's decision to honor Chavez over Jesus Christ. They also blamed the White House because last year President Obama declared March 31 to be "Cesar Chavez Day."

In a statement, Google said it enjoys celebrating holidays, but it's "difficult to choose" what to highlight in the Doodle.
