ABSECON, N.J. -

Police in Absecon are warning homeowners to lock their doors and windows after a family woke up only to find several items from their home were stolen, the third burglary report in a matter of weeks.

The burglary happened inside of a home on Seaside Avenue in the estates section late Sunday night.

According to police, this is the third burglary to happen in the area in three weeks. Police say in each case, the victims were asleep.

The victim of the latest burglary, Kirk Scalfaro tells FOX 29 someone snuck in through an unlocked back window late Sunday night, grabbed whatever they could and left.

The whole time, Scalfaro says his family was asleep. He didn't notice anything was missing until the morning.

"My wife noticed that her pocketbook was missing and some of her electronic books were missing," Scalfaro told FOX 29's Dave Kinchen. "She called me and asked if the pocketbook was in the car from last night, and realized it wasn't."

The latest burglary has some residents shaken. Neighboring communities have also reported the same trend.

Victims like Scalfaro will tell you it's hard getting back piece of mind.

"I'm somebody that grew up in Absecon all my life, I was born here, I lived here and it's just sad to see it. It puts a lot of things on alert."

Investigators say they are following up on several leads, but ask that residents report anything suspicious to the police department. If you have any information that might help police, you're asked to call the department at 609-641-0667 or Atlantic County Crimestoppers at 609-652-1234.
